Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - School Curriculum.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

354 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has agreed to meet with a person (details supplied) in Dublin 22 who is anxious to discuss a progressive teaching model for curricular mathematics particularly in view of a recently recorded decline in performance levels by pupils in this subject. [18616/99]

An official of my Department has previously met with the person named in the question concerning his ideas on mathematics teaching. Since then, the revised primary curriculum, including mathematics, has been published. I am given to understand that approaches to the teaching of mathematics promoted by the person named remain consistent with methodologies advocated in the revised mathematics programme.

I am arranging for a further meeting of officials with the named person in the near future.
