Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Junior Certificate Examination.

Jan O'Sullivan

Ceist:

382 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation regarding junior cycle students at Bruce College; if he has made a decision on whether they can sit the junior certificate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19046/99]

My Department wrote to Bruce College on 11 August 1999 stating that, having considered all aspects of the situation, I was satisfied that it would be unwarranted to preclude students from Bruce College from sitting the junior certificate examination. The precise modalities and conditions are to be worked out with my Department.

I have stressed that what is involved here is a limited arrangement whereby students will be facilitated in taking the examination. This arrangement is not to be taken as recognition by my Department either of the college or of any of the courses conducted by it.

I have also informed the authorities of Bruce College that various changes in relation to junior

certificate assessment are currently under consideration. In the event that changes occur and that there is a greater reliance on school based assessment it will be necessary to fully reconsider the basis upon which candidates may enter this examination.
