Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Special Educational Needs.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Ceist:

383 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the delay in providing the necessary resources to Killarney community college to enable the college to continue providing a special education service as has been the case since 1997; if he will ensure that funding is put in place immediately; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19047/99]

The position is that funding for vocational schools and community colleges is made to the VEC as part of a block grant that also covers the costs of VEC overheads and other activities apart from the second-level programme. It is a matter for the vocational education committees to determine the allocations for the individual schools in their vocational education committees.

An application for additional funding has been received from the VEC that includes a request from the college for a grant for materials and resources. This application is under consideration and my Department will be in contact with the VEC in the near future.

Finally, my Department has allocated additional teaching resources to County Kerry VEC to cater for the special needs pupils attending Killarney community college.
