Vol. 510 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

79 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the consideration, if any, which has been given to developing a state of the art underground public transport network to meet the needs and demands of Dublin for the 21st century; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21202/99]

In May 1998 the Government decided to proceed with a light rail network which includes a line from Sandyford to Ballymun and Dublin Airport, using the Harcourt Street and Broadstone disused railway alignments and with an underground section in the city centre.

CIE, on my instructions, has commissioned a consultancy team to undertake a strategic review of the development of the Dublin suburban rail network in the longer term. The consultants have been asked to look at all possible options for the development of the suburban rail network in the greater Dublin area up to 2020. I expect to receive the final report before the end of the year. I understand that the potential inclusion of underground heavy rail links within the existing network is being included in that evaluation.
