Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - Credit Institutions.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

14 Mr. Howlin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the progress, if any, being made with regard to the proposed code of practice on transparency for credit institutions; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21996/99]

The Director of Consumer Affairs is continuing her work to secure the agreement of the representative organisations of credit institutions to a code to which their members would voluntarily adhere.

Towards that end, the Director, earlier this month, put forward fresh proposals, in relation to the small number of issues outstanding, to the representative organisations.

I have maintained and continue to maintain close contact with the Director on this matter. I am sure the Deputy will join me in expressing support for this important consumer protection initiative by the Director; and in urging the representative organisations to exercise their best efforts to reach a speedy agreement on the code.
