Vol. 510 No. 2

Written Answers. - Job Initiative.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

43 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when an announcement will be made concerning the future of the jobs initiative scheme having regard to the fact that the first round is due to expire in November 1999; the future prospects of the 1,000 original participants particularly in view of the valuable work being done within the community by those on the scheme; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [21982/99]

Deloitte and Touche, Consultants, were commissioned by the Department in April 1999 to undertake a review of the job initiative programme with a view to evaluating the programme's effectiveness against its objectives on reaching the end of the first phase of its operation. A final draft of their report has been provided recently to my Department by the consultants and their recommendations are now being evaluated. I expect this process to be completed at an early stage and I will then be consulting with the social partners. All current participants on JI completing their three year term on the programme have received an extension to the end of the year. I am fully conscious of the need to reach early conclusions in the context of removing current uncertainty for participants and managing agents over the future operation of the programme.
