Written Answers. - Motor Insurance Advisory Board.
I re-established the Motor Insurance Advisory Board in September of 1998 with a view to establishing a mechanism for systematically monitoring developments in motor insurance costs and for providing meaningful analysis and evaluation of the factors influencing changes in motor insurance premium rates and related matters. The board has been given a very broad remit to examine and provide recommendations on the cost, availability and methods of delivery of motor insurance in the State. The expanded membership of the new board is broadly representative of consumer, insurance user, insurance industry, road safety and departmental interests.
While the board meets in plenary session from time to time, the technical and detailed work is carried out by three sub-committees of the board in the areas of claims, accidents and the insurance market.
The board is currently concentrating on an analyse, with the co-operation of insurers, of claims data on an individual company basis including the practice of charging different premiums for different categories of drivers and individuals.
