Vol. 510 No. 5

Written Answers. - Water Quality.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

135 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department will conduct its own research on the benefits and dangers of fluoridating water in view of international evidence of links between increased risk of hip fractures, cancer and fluoridation; and if he will cease the fluoridation programme in view of poor den tal benefit from fluoridation shown by studies in other countries. [23011/99]

I am aware of no reliable evidence linking water fluoridation and hip fractures. The most reliable study to date, the Oregon hip fracture study, shows that there is a protective effect against hip fracture for people living in fluoridated areas.

I am not aware of any reliable study anywhere in the world showing a link between water fluoridation and cancers.
