Vol. 510 No. 5

Written Answers. - Job Losses.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

81 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when her attention was drawn to the second set of job losses in Fruit of the Loom, Buncrana, County Donegal, where 45 people were added to the 190 of the initial announcement; and if she will make a statement on the matter in view of the assurances given only a week previous. Ceist:

82 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the fact that some jobs have gone as units closed last week in Fruit of the Loom, Buncrana, County Donegal in spite of the assur ances to the 190 of the initial announcement that job losses would not take effect until January 2000; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23061/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 81 and 82 together.

The company's announcement on 28 October envisaged that approximately 190 redundancies would take place prior to the end of January 2000. This was the company's best estimate regarding both the number of redundancies and the likely timing based on its business prospects at that time.

I understand that as these prospects become clearer over the next few weeks both the number of redundancies and the timing of these could alter, but not to any significant degree.

While ten employees have recently been made redundant, I am informed that they are part of the 190 redundancies already announced. These employees were service operators to the satellite units in Milford, Malin and Raphoe, which closed over the past few months.
