Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 21 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Hayes – the need to provide emergency accommodation in existing barracks or other facilities lying idle due to the escalating problem of homelessness in the Dublin area; (2) Deputy Gay Mitchell – the high fixed interest rates being charged by local authorities on long standing mortgages, based on national legislation and rules; (3) Deputy Naughten – the future of peat generated electricity in light of the 1999 International Energy Agency Report on Ireland; (4) Deputy Michael D. Higgins – the closure of more than 100 national schools on Thursday last, 18 November 1999, from industrial action taken by school principals as a result of the failure of the Department of Education and Science to provide secretarial and caretaker support; (5) Deputy Durkan – the serious housing crisis in County Kildare with particular reference to meeting the needs of first time house buyers; (6) Deputy Sargent – the failure to include the construction of the northern Luas line in the national development plan; (7) Deputy Lawlor – the highly successful education project in disadvantaged areas of Clondalkin which has seen a quadrupling in the number of young people entering third level education and the urgent need for full Exchequer funding for the continuation of the project when the EU part-funding shortly comes to an end; (8) Deputy Timmins – the failure of the Department of Education and Science to address the difficulties students have with dyslexia; (9) Deputy Clune – the need for the Government to provide funding to ensure the continuation of the New Opportunities for Women, NOW, projects throughout the State; (10) Deputy Yates – the failure of the telecommunications system on Friday last when vital business and communication links did not function; (11) Deputy O'Shea – the collapse of the Eircom network in parts of Dublin on Friday last that left large parts of the city without either land lines or mobile connections; (12) Deputy Sheehan – that the Minister postpone the introduction of the MOT test on motor vehicles due to commence on January 2000 until such time as our road system is brought up to European standards; (13) Deputy Neville – the need for the Minister for Health and Children to provide services for those suffering from Asperger's syndrome disability and (14) Deputy Broughan – the urgent need for the Minister to intervene to ensure the security of up to 150 jobs at St. Joseph's Private Hospital, Springdale Road, Raheny, Dublin 5.

The matters raised by Deputies Yates, O'Shea, Hayes and Gay Mitchell have been selected for discussion.
