Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dental Service.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

208 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received correspondence on behalf of a person (details supplied) in County Cork; if he will acknowledge the hardship being caused in this case where a man on invalidity pension of £73 per week had to pay approximately £63.70 to have a dental plate fitted; and if this charge will be waived on humanitarian grounds. [24164/99]

I understand from the Southern Health Board that the individual concerned attended the board's dental clinic in Blackpool, Cork, on 16 November 1999. He has two further appointments and will receive a full course of dental treatment over the coming weeks. The cost of all treatment, dentures, etc., will be covered as the person is a medical card holder.

The Southern Health Board understands that the sum of £63.70 mentioned by the Deputy was quoted by a private dentist who would carry out the work by private arrangement. However, the individual concerned chose not to have the work done privately.
