Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Consultant Appointments.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

225 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to increase the number of consultant nephrologists in view of the fact it is well below the average of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. [24412/99]

There are currently 14 posts of consultant nephrologist in Ireland, including two posts of consultant paediatric nephrologist. In addition, two new posts of consultant paediatric nephrologist have recently been approved by Comhairle na nOspidéal.

Based on the most recent data available from Comhairle na nOspidéal, in Ireland there is a higher or similar number of consultant posts in renal medicine per head of population than in England and Scotland.
