Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

357 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received correspondence from a person (details supplied) in County Cork regarding the failure of his Department to recognise his 1999 BA degree in sociology for the purpose of teaching the CSPE junior cycle subject; and the assistance his Department will offer to resolve the problem. [24016/99]

The Registration Council is a statutory body charged with the recognition of qualifications for the purpose of teaching in secondary schools.

The holders of qualifications, which do not have general recognition, must apply to the Registration Council, on an individual basis, for recognition of the particular qualifications held for the purpose of securing an incremental teaching position in a secondary school.

The qualifications held by the person in question do not have general recognition. An application for recognition of his qualifications was submitted to the secretariat of the Registration Council on 3 September 1999.

This application is being processed in accordance with the Registration Council's normal procedures and it is expected that it will be presented to the Registration Council for consideration at its meeting on 9 December 1999. The applicant will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible thereafter.
