Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Student Safety.

John Perry

Ceist:

387 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo regarding the safety and supervision of school children who arrive at schools before 9.15 a.m. and remain after 3.05 p.m; the plans, if any, he has in place to deal with these problems to ensure that the children are safe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24381/99]

I can confirm that a letter was received in my Department on 16 November outlining concerns regarding supervision at Grange national school. My officials responded on 17 November setting out the position regarding the whole issue of supervision and safety of children using school transport.

Essentially, it is a matter for the managerial authorities of primary schools to arrange adequate supervision and insurance cover for children while they are on the school premises. My Department has informed schools that this responsibility rests solely with the board of management.
