Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

56 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has for the renovation of Garda stations in villages in Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24337/99]

There are some 37 Garda stations in County Kerry, comprising one divisional headquarters, three district headquarters, one area headquarters and 32 other stations. Of those located in rural villages, the following is the case for stations, by Garda district, where refurbishments are planned or have recently been completed.

Abbeydorney Garda station was recently painted externally and part internally, and Ardfert Garda station also received both internal and external painting this year. At Castlegregory Garda station, a new kitchen was recently provided, and approval has been granted for a complete internal painting.

A new basic unit type Garda station is also planned for Ballinskelligs, and I signed a contract for this scheme on 4 November fast. On the same date, I officially opened the newly refurbished Garda station at Sneem. In the case of Valentia Garda station, major maintenance works are planned, and approval has been granted to the Office of Public Works to proceed to tender on the matter. In addition, a new basic unit type Garda station is planned for Waterville.

With respect to Farranfore Garda station, approval has been given to proceed with improvements to the entrance of the premises. Ballybunion Garda station is to receive a major refurbishment shortly, at a cost of £52,000, and work on the scheme will commence shortly. Improvement works to the boundary wall at Ballyduff Garda station have also been approved, and Ballylongford Garda station and the associated official accommodation are to receive replacement windows. Moreover, Knocknagoshel Garda station was recently painted both internally and externally. In addition, a major refurbishment scheme has been approved for Tarbert Garda station, and the Office of Public Works is currently engaged in this project. I officially opened the newly refurbished Garda station at Kenmare in June last.

The accommodation requirements of Garda stations, including the need for refurbishment work, are the subject of ongoing review and monitoring, to ensure that resources made available to enhance the stock of Garda accommodation are expended in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. Significant refurbishment and construction work has already occurred with respect to Garda stations in County Kerry, and many more similar developments are planned.

As with all items on the Garda maintenance programme, however, work must proceed according to overall priorities and the availability of financial and other resources.
