Vol. 511 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Jimmy Deenihan

Ceist:

18 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if the quality management system for the processed rope mussel industry has been finalised. [24664/99]

(Dr. Woods): The Irish rope mussel industry has experienced significant growth since its emergence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Total production in 1998 exceeded 8,000 tonnes and was valued at approximately £10 million. The industry is now an important source of employment and revenue for many coastal communities.
The future success of the industry is critically dependent on the achievement of world class levels of food safety and product quality which will act as a crucial underpinning for customer and market confidence in the product. Bord Iascaigh Mhara was, therefore, asked to formulate, as a matter of urgency, proposals for the development and implementation of a total quality management system, for processed rope mussels.
BIM has now drawn up proposals and plans which will, I believe, support and facilitate the development of a world-class safety and quality system for Irish rope mussels. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the necessary funding is being put in place for implementation of this important initiative, which will be carried forward by BIM in close co-operation with my Department and the industry.
