Vol. 511 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inheritance Tax.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

70 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Finance the steps, if any, he will take regarding inheritance tax as it applies to unrelated persons jointly in ownership of their home whereby the surviving inheritor may be obliged to sell the house in order to meet the tax liability. [24824/99]

I indicated to the Dáil earlier this year, in the course of the Finance Bill debate, and in response to parliamentary questions in recent months, that I am aware of the tax burden facing certain individuals, particularly on the inheritance of the family home where they had been residing. I undertook that I would examine the capital acquisitions tax code, including inheritance tax, in detail for the forthcoming budget. This examination is currently taking place.
