Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - Library Projects.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

309 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received a request from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for funding for the development, equipping and stocking of a new extended public library in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin; if so, the consideration, if any, he is giving to the submission; the funding, if any, he will provide; when he will announce details of this funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24848/99]

The capital provision for library development was increased from £2.76 million in 1998 to £7.2 million for this year.

In the light of the increased funding available, library authorities were asked by my Department in January 1999 to submit a prioritised list of library projects in order that an expenditure programme could be formulated by the Department. The priority building proposal identified by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown library authority to my Department was the redevelopment of the Dún Laoghaire branch library. I have sought additional information in relation to the proposal from the library authority and on receipt of this I expect to be in a position to give a decision.
