Ceist:319 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason his Department has not completed the audit for Wicklow County Council for 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25144/99]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 318 and 319 together.
The local government audit service is responsible for 206 audits, including local authorities and other local bodies. The audits in respect of 1997 for Mayo County Council, Wicklow County Council and New Ross Urban District Council have not been completed. The following table contains a full listing of the audit status of local authorities' 1998 annual financial statements.
Finalisation of the 1997 audit for Wicklow County Council awaits consideration and decision by the local government auditor concerned on a formal objection lodged in relation to expenditure incurred during the year in question. This matter is currently being examined by the local government audit service.
In undertaking the audit of various bodies, local government auditors are independent in the exercise of their functions and the Minister for the Environment and Local Government has no function in this regard.
