Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - Canal Roadway.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

352 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if a stretch of road leading down to the house of a person (details supplied) on the canal line at Coralstown, Mullingar, County Westmeath, will be maintained and properly repaired; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25239/99]

The canal roadway at Coralstown, Mullingar was not designed to cater for motorised traffic. Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department advise me that the condition of the canal roadway is adequate to provide for access relating to the management and maintenance of the canal. The canal roadway is mainly used by residents for accessing their properties and, in the past, Dúchas has provided filling material at no cost to residents to allow them carry out repairs to the roadway. It is the intention of Dúchas to continue with this practice.
