Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

375 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a second deputy principal to Loreto secondary school, Balbriggan, County Dublin, in view of the fact that the population of the school will rise from 900 to 940 in September 2000 and expected growth in Balbriggan envisages a population of 25,000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24853/99]

Seán Ryan

Ceist:

415 Mr. S. Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will respond favourably to the need for a second deputy principal for Loreto secondary school, Balbriggan, County Dublin. [25400/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 375 and 415 together.

The teacher allocation to an individual voluntary secondary school for a particular school year is determined by the enrolment in the school at the end of the preceding September.

A second deputy principal post is allocated on an ex-quota basis to second level schools in the free education scheme with enrolments of 1,000 or more pupils or to designated disadvantaged schools with 900 or more pupils.

The school to which the Deputies refer does not satisfy the requirements for the allocation of a second ex-quota deputy principal post in the current school year. The position will be reviewed for the 2000-01 school year.
