Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - Physical Education Facilities.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

403 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, he is taking to provide proper physical education at St. Patrick's special school, Kells Road, Kilkenny; if he will examine ways to provide outdoor play area furniture in order that children attending the school can enjoy outdoor activities; and if he will provide extra funding for this project in order that extra activities such as swimming can be included in the school's activities. [25322/99]

The teaching of physical education is included as part of the primary school curriculum and is delivered in all schools, including special schools.

My Department has not received any application from the school in question for funding towards the provision of outdoor play area furniture. However, the school may apply for such funding to my Department's planning and building unit and the matter will be considered.

My Department does not currently fund extra activities such as swimming undertaken by individual schools. Any decision to undertake such activities is a matter for the board of management of the school.
