146 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the options available to a US citizen on a short stay visa; the position if this citizen married an Irish person and obtained work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25531/99]
A US national may be granted up to three months permission to remain as a visitor by an immigration officer upon arrival in the State. If that person wishes to remain for longer than three months they should register and apply for further permission to remain in the State. The application may be made at the registration office for the area in which the applicant resides, the Immigration Registration Office, Garda Síochána, Harcourt Square or, for persons residing outside the Dublin area, the Garda Superintendent's office for the district in which they live. If the person wishes to take up employment, their prospective employer will, as of now, require a work permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. If the person married an Irish national they can apply to the registration office for permission to remain on that basis and persons with such permission to remain are exempted from the work permit requirement.
