Vol. 512 No. 2

Written Answers. - Nigerian Conflict.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

45 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the initiatives, if any, he will pursue to assist the situation in Nigeria; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25640/99]

I am very concerned about the recent reports of outbreaks of ethnic violence in Nigeria and of a deterioration in the security situation in a number of regions of the country, particularly in the Niger Delta area and in Lagos. I understand that there have been a number of clashes between members of two ethnic groups, the Yorubas and the Hausas, and that the clashes have been strongly condemned by President Obasanjo.

I will continue to monitor the situation closely through the Irish Embassy in Nigeria, and in consultation with our partners in the European Union.

Ireland warmly welcomed the return to democratically elected civilian rule in Nigeria in May of this year. The Government is anxious to support President Obasanjo as he and his Government face the challenges which the consolidation of this new phase of democratic and economic transition present and work to promote political and economic reforms.

We look forward to the restoration of stability and the continuing development of a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria for the benefit of its own citizens and the wider west African region.
