Vol. 512 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Code.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

111 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for Finance if he will address the issues relating to the tax affairs of a person (details supplied). [25766/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the issues referred to by the Deputy relate, among other matters, to an underpayment of PAYE arising from an over allowance of mortgage interest relief for the years 1997-98 and 1998-99. The inspector of taxes had decided to collect the underpayments by restricting the taxpayers' tax-free allowances for the year 1999-00. The taxpayers in question wrote to the Revenue's customer services policy unit in April 1999 outlining their concerns regarding the issues now raised by the Deputy. I understand that the Revenue Commissioners issued a comprehensive response to the taxpayers on these issues in June 1999, and also invited the taxpayers to contact them for further clarification, if required. Until the receipt of the correspondence enclosed with the Depu ty's question, the commissioners were not aware that the taxpayers were still dissatisfied with their response. The issues are now being re-examined in detail by Revenue's director of customer services who will issue a further response and will also be available to meet with the taxpayers to discuss their concerns.
