Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

221 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science the safeguards, if any, he will introduce to ensure that children are not put at risk by providers of school transport in view of the serious implications for the safety of children arising from a recent court case (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27291/99]

In relation to the court case referred to by the Deputy, the school service in question was a private service and was not subject to the requirements of the school transport scheme.

My Department and Bus Éireann, which operates the scheme, on behalf of the Department, place special emphasis on safety and, to this end, have a wide range of checking procedures in place to ensure a safe and reliable service, including insurance cover. I should emphasise that in operating the scheme, Bus Éireann is fully compliant with all relevant regulations as laid down by the Department of the Environment.

All pupils carried under the scheme, on Bus Éireann and contractor's vehicles, are covered by insurance while travelling. Bus Éireann carries its own insurance. It is a legal requirement and also a condition of contract that contractor's vehicles carry current and valid motor insurance at all times when operating under the scheme.
