Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - Hospitals Building Programme.

Michael Bell

Ceist:

33 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Health and Children if the building of the proposed new private facility at Beaumont Hospital will mean the closure of all existing private beds at the public hospital; if specially dedicated staff, from consultants through to nursing and other health workers, will be recruited for the new facility rather than being shared between the public and private facilities; if the building of a private facility will in any way adversely affect waiting lists for the public service such as in a situation where, in view of current difficulties with staff recruitment, potential or actual public hospital staff are employed instead in the private hospital; and if he will make a statement on his position on the growth of the private hospital sector. [27083/99]

Beaumont Hospital board is currently considering proposals for building a private facility on the hospital campus. However, these proposals have not been developed to an extent that the issues referred to by the Deputy can be addressed. At this stage, the hospital board is seeking approval in principle from my Department to proceed with developing a specification which will fully assess all matters relevant to the proposed new private development.
