Vol. 512 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Technology.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

64 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the extent to which state of the art technology is available in the health services; if this technology is on a par with that available in the United Kingdom and the US; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27136/99]

The Deputy will be aware that the Irish healthcare system ranks among the highest European and international standards from a medical high-technological perspective. New and developing technologies are in place in our major hospitals and are certainly on a par with those in the United Kingdom and the United States. Significant emphasis is placed on the value of research and development in an ever evolving quest for new and better modes of treatment for the health gain of our community.
