Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shredding of Records.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

330 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Finance the regulations governing the shredding of records in the offices of the Ombudsman, the Information Commissioner and the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners. [1052/00]

There are no specific regulations governing the shredding of records in any of the offices referred to by the Deputy.

The Office of the Ombudsman and the Office of the Information Commissioner are not subject to the requirements of the National Archives Act 1986 in regard to the disposal of records. While records are shredded from time to time in the Office of the Ombudsman, any records which are considered to be important or significant are retained.

In the case of the Office of the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners any records, the retention of which is no longer necessary, are disposed of in accordance with the provisions of the National Archives Act 1986.
