Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Refugee Status.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

682 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if refugee status will be granted to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 in view of the health circumstances of her child; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1825/00]

The person referred to by the Deputy was found not to qualify as a refugee in accordance with the definition contained in the 1951 convention relating to the status of refugees as amended by the 1967 protocol and as defined in section 2 of the Refugee Act, 1996. She did not avail of an opportunity to appeal this decision.

She was informed in September 1999 that it was proposed to remove her from the State and she was afforded the opportunity to make representations. Detailed representations were received on her behalf as to why she should be allowed to remain in the State and, as I informed the Deputy in a letter last November, these are under consideration in my Department.

I expect to be in a position to make a decision on this matter in the coming weeks and I will write and let the Deputy and the person referred to know the outcome.
