Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Ceist:

703 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he has refused to respond to a case brought to his attention in September 1999 concerning the inadequacies of services for children with dyslexia (details supplied); if he will respond to the representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1080/00]

I regret the delay in responding to the case raised by the Deputy. My Department has now been in contact with the mother of the child in question and arrangements are being made to investigate the child's needs as a matter of urgency, with a view to determining what additional support, if any, is required. I will advise the Deputy of the outcome of this investigation.

I understand that, in addition to attending his local school, the child is currently availing of an after-school programme delivered by the association for children and adults with learning disabilities. My Department is committed to supporting the work of this association. In the current year, an allocation of £50,000 is being made to the association to support its efforts.
