Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

763 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received a proposal from a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 for the introduction of drama to the school curriculum; and, if so, when he will respond. [1539/00]

I received a proposal regarding the introduction of drama to the primary school curriculum, via the Taoiseach's office, in May of last year from the person referred to by the Deputy. I issued a reply to the Office of the Taoiseach, outlining the situation that pertains in relation to drama in the primary curriculum on 24 August 1999.

Briefly, the position is that drama formed part of the primary school curriculum that was introduced in 1971. It also forms part of the revised curriculum that was introduced to all primary schools at the beginning of this school year.

I acknowledge the importance of drama lessons and the revised curriculum deals not only with the elements of voice production and acting talent, but also emphasises the benefits to be gained from exploring life through the creation of plot, theme, fiction and make-believe. It should also be noted that primary school teachers are required to be able to teach all aspects of the curriculum, including drama, to all age groups at primary level.
