Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Multi-Denominational Schools.

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

787 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the plight of a pupil from a multi-denominational primary school who is finding it extremely difficult to obtain non-denominational second level education in his area; and the proposals, if any, he has to address this emerging problem which will shortly affect other pupils. [1991/00]

A significant characteristic of second level education is the range of school types in the system, including voluntary secondary schools, vocational schools, community colleges, community schools and comprehensive schools. I expect that all post-primary schools, regardless of type or ethos, would employ flexible strategies which would enable them to accommodate children of different or non-denominational backgrounds. This expectation is now underpinned by the Education Act, a specific objective of which is "to promote equality of access to and participation in education and to promote the means whereby students may benefit from education".
