Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Law Reform Commission Report.

John Bruton

Ceist:

94 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a statement on the recent Law Reform Commission report on gazumping. [23147/99]

I have welcomed the Law Reform Commission report on gazumping as a comprehensive examination of the system of payment of booking deposits in property transactions both in Ireland and internationally and I am having the report examined in my Department.

I also have been in contact with my colleagues, the Tánaiste and the Minister with responsibility for labour, trade and consumer affairs. They are examining the report, in consultation with the Director of Consumer Affairs, particularly in relation to the recommendations which have implications for the consumer protection legislation for which the Minister for Labour, Trade and Consumer Affairs is responsible and for which the director has statutory enforcement powers. Officials of my Department have arranged to meet shortly both with the Director of Consumer Affairs and with officials of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, in order to address the issues raised in the report.
