Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Development Plan.

Ceist:

104 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the population projections used by his Department in preparing the national development plan and specifically that section of the plan which deals with the provision of additional housing units; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26696/99]

My Department had regard to demographic and economic forecasts from a number of sources when preparing the provisions in the national development plan relating to housing including: Population and Labour Force projections 2001-31 published by the Central Statistics Office in June 1999, An Economic Assessment of Recent House Price Developments by Peter Bacon and Associates, the Bacon Report (April 1998), National Investment Priorities for the period 2000-2006, ESRI (1999).

These forecasts of continued strong population growth and particularly growth in the number of new households together with strong economic growth point towards continued high levels of demand for housing. For this reason the national development plan provides the framework for an integrated investment strategy to facilitate the provision of 500,000 houses over the next ten years.
