Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

106 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has for recycling of waste produce to be put on a financially viable footing; if his attention has been drawn to reports that one of the major items creating difficulties for disposal is newsprint; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1742/00]

Difficulties have been experienced in Ireland and internationally in relation to the recycling of paper, including newsprint, as a result of a reduction in the demand and price for waste paper. As a result, the separate collection and reprocessing of such materials has been curtailed.

The financial viability of waste recycling is dependent on the development of more extensive and stable markets for recyclable materials. A policy statement on waste recycling and waste recovery generally is currently in preparation. This policy document will address in detail the factors and practical considerations which are relevant to the achievement of Government policy objectives in this area, and outline the scope of measures which will be undertaken in support of better recycling performance.
