Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Retail Sector Developments.

John Gormley

Ceist:

152 Mr. Gormley asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on whether the Casual Trading Act, 1995, should be reviewed in consultation with representatives of market traders to bring it into line with the recommendation of the National Economic and Social Forum in its report entitled Self Employment, Enterprise and Social Inclusion; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1133/00]

The Casual Trading Act, the principal purpose of which is the regulation of casual trading by local authorities, has been in effect for less than five years and many local authorities outside Dublin are only in the process of implementing it in their own areas. Accordingly, I have no immediate plans to change the Act.

If the development and modernisation of this sector requires promotion in accordance with the recommendations of the National Economic and Social Forum, in my view local authorities and local tourism interests are best placed to foster self employment and enterprise in this regard.
