Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Inservice Training.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

175 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to provide in-service training for practising primary teachers in relation to the education of pupils with learning disorders, for example, dyslexia, dyspraxia and attention deficit disorder; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2059/00]

A variety of inservice courses in the area of teaching pupils with learning disorders is available to teachers every summer and such courses are supported by the in-career development unit of my Department. In addition, under certain conditions, the in-career development unit of the Department recognises courses in this area organised by groups and individuals.

The diploma in special education course in St. Patrick's College of Education is available to those teachers of pupils with learning disorders who work in special schools and special classes or who work as resource teachers in mainstream schools.

The majority of pupils with learning disorders such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and attention deficit disorder are taught by remedial-learning support teachers. There are six inservice courses organised every year for such teachers.
