Vol. 513 No. 2

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

84 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to allocate additional funding to the Office of Public Works to allow it to carry out emergency maintenance work on the River Shannon between Banagher and Meelick to improve water flow on the river; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2151/00]

No arterial drainage scheme has been completed on the river Shannon catchment and consequently the Commissioners of Public Works have no responsibility nor can they carry out maintenance on the river under the statutory powers. However, I am conscious of the problems on the river Shannon and the Commissioners of Public Works would be happy to consider any proposals or suggestions which any of the local authorities, or other agencies involved, might have and to offer any appropriate advice.
