Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Liquor Licensing Laws.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

210 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of public houses and licensed premises trading by way of a six day intoxicating liquor licence; if he will propose an amnesty for these licence holders similar to that introduced in the early 1960s in order to allow for the conversion of the licence to a full ordinary seven day trading publican's licence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2827/00]

The Intoxicating Liquor Bill which is in the course of being drafted for publication in this session includes a scheme whereby the holders of restricted licences, i.e. six day, early closing, or six day and early closing licences, will be able to convert such licences to ordinary seven day licences subject to certain restrictions on their disposal. I can confirm that the scheme will have certain similarities with the 1960s scheme.

A total of 102 such restricted licences were issued by the Revenue Commissioners in 1998, the latest year for which figures are available, of which 63 were six day licences.
