Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Primary Teaching Courses.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

229 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of places available on the post-graduate primary teaching course currently being advertised; the number of places available on the previous course which were offered in this area; the plans, if any, he has to repeat this course at a future date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2723/00]

There will be 280 places available on the recently advertised post-graduate course for primary teaching. This is the same number as was available for the previously advertised course which is currently nearing completion.

Future intake and output requirements in primary teacher training are the subject of ongoing review between my Department, the colleges of education and the Higher Education Authority. If the ongoing review process identifies the need for a further course, consultation will take place with the colleges of education on the timing of such a course. At this juncture it is not possible to say if or when that will happen.
