Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Immigration Service.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

88 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has for the establishment of a national immigration service as recommended by the Irish Commission for Justice and Peace in its document, First Notes Towards a Comprehensive Irish Immigration Policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2523/00]

On 14 December 1999 I announced a package of measures in the field of immigration and asylum following consideration by the Government of a comprehensive report which I had presented. One of the measures decided upon by the Government was that, early in the new year, I would present a further report which would deal, amongst other things, with the question of a separate immigration structure under the aegis of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. I expect to be reporting to Government in this regard at an early date.
