Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fireworks Importation.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

93 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of fireworks used over the New Year festivities; the quantity which had Garda clearance; the noticeable problems, if any; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2414/00]

The Explosives Act, 1875 classifies fireworks as explosives. In accordance with the Act, explosives cannot be imported without an importation licence issued by my Department. Current policy only permits, subject to certain conditions, the authorisation of the importation of fireworks for organised displays conducted by professional operators.

My Department issued importation licences relating to 44 fireworks displays for New Year festivities. The total amount of fireworks authorised for importation was 9.5 tonnes.

I am not aware that there were any problems with these displays.
