Vol. 513 No. 5

Written Answers. - Youth Projects.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

75 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the allocation of the young people's facilities and services fund to Dublin; the approved projects; the moneys drawn down to date; the additional moneys, if any, available for 2000 and new projects; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2878/00]

The Government set up the young people's facilities and services fund in 1998 to develop youth facilities, including sport and recreational facilities, and services in disadvantaged areas where a significant drug problem exists or has the potential to develop. The three year fund aims to attract young people in those areas, at risk of becoming involved in drugs, into more healthy and productive pursuits.

More than £35 million has been provided for expenditure over a three year period, 1999-2001, for this purpose, including a contribution of £264,000 from the Irish Youth Foundation. More than £22 million has been allocated in support for 268 individual projects in Dublin, most of which are due to run over the three years of the current fund. I am arranging to have the full list of individual projects forwarded to the Deputy, funding for which is held in the Vote of the Department of Education and Science. I understand that to date, almost £6 million has been drawn down.
