Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

297 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will establish a Garda station in Donaghmede, Dublin 13, in view of the increase in the number of houses and residents and the proposals to build a large number of houses in the Baldoyle, Donaghmede, Grange Abbey and Clarehall areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3974/00]

The Garda authorities are responsible for detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources. They have informed me that the Donaghmede area consists of Clarehall, Donaghmede, St. Donaghs, Grangmore, Grange Abbey, New Grove, Millbrook, Newbury, Hollywell, the Donahies and the Beeches housing estates. It is located between two and three miles from Coolock Garda station. This area consists of approximately 18,000 people. It is a residential area with local authority houses in St Donagh's and Millbrook.

The main amenities in the area include one church, junior and senior national schools, two community schools, railway station, community club and the Donaghmede shopping complex.

Since 1973, numerous representations have been made by public representatives and residents' associations for a Garda station in Donaghmede. This was studied in detail, and it was decided to increase the Garda strength in Coolock to provide a better police service for the area. The current strength of Coolock Garda station is 91.
A Garda clinic opened in Donaghmede shopping centre on 11 December 1987 and is opened to the public when resources permit as follows: Monday–Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 midday and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday– Thursday–Friday, 1 a.m. to 12 midday, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Donaghmede area receives maximum Garda attention at all times from available resources.
Crime in Donaghmede area has decreased over the past number of years which must be attributed to a significant degree to the ongoing efforts of the Garda.
Even though there are problems in the Donaghmede area, they are not of a proportion which would require an additional Garda station. The allocation of additional personnel will be considered as extra resources become available and in the context of policing requirements nationally.
