Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Ceist:

324 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the services and facilities available in all second level schools in County Meath for pupils with dyslexia; the proposals, if any, he has to expand and improve the service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4172/00]

Second level pupils with a specific learning disability are normally integrated into ordinary classes. In such situations they may receive additional tutorial support through the remedial teacher, guidance counsellor and subject teachers.

All second level schools in the free education scheme, including those in County Meath, have an entitlement to an ex-quota allocation in respect of remedial and guidance. The appropriate allocation for remedial and guidance for the current school year has been made to school authorities concerned. The position will be reviewed for the 2000-01 school year.

In addition to the range of support services that are available to children with specific learning disabilities, including dyslexia, within the school system, my Department is continuing to support the work carried out in this area by the Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities. In the current year, an allocation of £50,000 will be made to that association.

I intend to continue to monitor developments in this area to ensure that adequate provision continues to be made available to the pupils in question.
