Vol. 514 No. 3

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

88 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the nature and location of any outstanding complaints made to his Department relating to illegal removal of material from the foreshore; the steps, if any, he has taken to investigate these complaints; the number and location of prosecutions taken in 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4194/00]

The Foreshore Acts 1933-1998 empower me to ban the removal of material from foreshore and provide for severe penalties to be imposed on any person convicted of illegally removing such material. My Department promptly investigates all complaints about illegal removal of material from the foreshore, and takes appropriate action.

In 1999, seven prohibitory notices and orders were issued under the Foreshore Acts, 1933 to 1998, to protect the foreshore in Counties Kerry and Donegal. No prosecutions were required. There are no outstanding complaints requiring attention.
