Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Housing Aid for the Elderly.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

228 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the scheme under which a person (details supplied) in County Mayo should apply to get a toilet installed in her home in view of the fact she has already applied under the essential repair grant scheme. [4966/00]

There are a number of options available to assist elderly persons to improve their housing conditions.

These include house improvement loans of up to £6,000 unsecured and £15,000 secured from the local authorities, which are available to low income households for the carrying out of necessary works to improve, repair or extend their existing houses; the scheme of improvements works in lieu of local authority housing and the disabled persons and essential repair grant schemes. Details of these schemes are available from the local authorities.

There is also the special housing aid for the elderly scheme, operated by the health boards, which assists in carrying out works to improve the housing conditions of elderly persons living alone in unfit and insanitary accommodation. The community welfare officer at the health board will be able to advise regarding assistance under this scheme.
