Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Traveller Accommodation.

Chris Flood

Ceist:

232 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the progress, if any, made in the provision by 2000 of 3,100 units of additional accommodation for the Traveller community as recommended in the report of the Task Force on the Travelling Community published in July 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4998/00]

The number of additional units of accommodation comprising standard houses, group housing units and halting site bays provided for Travellers during the period 1996-99 was 607. A further 345 units were refurbished in this period.

The Housing (Traveller Accommodation) Act, 1998, requires each relevant housing authority, namely, county council, county borough corporation, borough corporation and Bray and Dundalk urban district councils, to prepare and adopt a five year local Traveller accommodation programme by 31 March 2000. It is envisaged that implementation of these accommodation programmes which will be in force for the period 2000-04 will accelerate the provision of accommodation for Traveller families.
