Vol. 514 No. 6

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

260 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if high fencing will be erected at the rear of the boundary between houses and the Grand Canal (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter [4838/00]

The provision of fencing to protect private property adjoining the canal is a matter for individual property owners, and I therefore have no plans to provide high fencing at the location concerned.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

261 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the amounts allocated to the Tralee ship canal in the years from 1996-97, 1997-98 and 1998-99; and the amount projected for the year 1999-2000; and when the work will commence to complete the inner basin section of the canal. [4862/00]

The restoration of the Tralee ship canal is being undertaken on my behalf by the Office of Public Works. Expenditure on the project in each of the past four years was as follows: 1996 – £50,000; 1997 – £293,163; 1998 – £102,428; 1999 – £105,766.

The funding provided in the Office of Public Works Vote this year is £1.0 million. As the Deputy is aware a contract is in progress for the construction of a swing bridge and ancillary works at Blennerville. It is hoped that works can begin on the basin this summer.
